IPAT Advanced Management Program (AMP™)

The flagship residency for executives advancing to enterprise leadership. In ten days you will build the complete senior-leader toolkit — strategy, execution, finance, people, risk and the political craft of institutions — and leave with a board-defended enterprise agenda for your own organisation.

IPAT Executive Certificate 10 intensive days Senior executives one step from enterprise leadership, new general managers, divisional presidents, high-potential leaders nominated by boards, and senior public-sector leaders moving to enterprise-scale roles.

The executive challenge

The problem this program solves

AMP™ is IPAT’s flagship multi-module journey, built for the transition from functional excellence to enterprise leadership — the point where general management, capital judgement and institutional craft replace technical brilliance. Week one rebuilds the enterprise disciplines: strategy, execution architecture, financial judgement and decision quality. Week two builds the leadership systems: talent and incentives, stakeholder and political craft, risk and resilience, and the board-level capstone. Faculty are drawn across all IPAT academies, and the cohort is deliberately cross-sector — the peer network is a designed outcome.

Context

Why this matters now

The step to enterprise leadership is the least-supported transition in professional life: functional stars are promoted into general management and left to improvise
Enterprises now face simultaneous strategy, technology and resilience transitions — senior leaders need the full toolkit, not a specialism
African institutions increasingly promote from within and need a serious internal pipeline: AMP™ is that pipeline, in residence

Capability

What you will be able to do

  • Think as an enterprise leader: read strategy, capital, risk and organisation as one system
  • Build execution architectures that convert intent into delivered results
  • Make high-stakes decisions with a disciplined, repeatable personal process
  • Lead talent, incentives and succession as instruments of value creation
  • Manage stakeholders — boards, regulators, communities, partners — with economic and political craft
  • Produce and defend a board-ready enterprise agenda for your own organisation

The IPAT Course Standard

The ten-day journey

Each day is a deliberate progression in managerial capability — from strategic context, to analytical frameworks, to applied practice, to executive judgement under pressure, to a capstone that produces something your organisation keeps. The ten-day format runs as two five-day residencies, extending the journey into institutional implementation.

Delivery & Rigor

Action learning, not passive lectures

Every IPAT program is a working residency built on one discipline: analyse, decide, deploy, refine.

Pre-work, two weeks out

A mandatory reading pack, a sector dataset and a short diagnostic arrive two weeks before day one. You do not arrive to be introduced; you arrive ready to work.

Simulation under pressure

Decision rounds and data labs run on realistic, messy African data. Positions are defended, consequences are revealed, and judgement is debriefed, not answers dictated.

The 30-day accountability nudge

Thirty days after the capstone you report progress on your implementation plan and faculty respond with a structured review. The learning that sticks is the learning that is followed up.

IPAT Signature Case™

The Group That Grew Faster Than Its Leadership

A pan-African consumer group has doubled revenue in four years through acquisition. The founder-CEO is exhausted, the executive team is a collection of acquired-company leaders with no shared operating language, the group’s capital is allocated by whoever shouts hardest, and an activist investor has just appeared on the register.

Your decision: As incoming group CEO: rebuild the centre first at the cost of growth, keep acquiring to consolidate momentum, or split the group — each path betting your first two years on a different diagnosis of what actually binds the enterprise.

Real-World Case Study

The General-Management Residency: Why the Format Endures

The executive general-management program format — pioneered by Harvard’s AMP lineage and mirrored worldwide — has endured for half a century because of what its outcomes show: cross-industry cohorts, live cases and defended capstones produce measurable leadership advancement, while lecture-based equivalents do not.

The lesson: The transition to enterprise leadership is a practice problem, not a knowledge problem: residency, cross-sector peers and defended capstones are what move the needle.

IPAT Data Lab™

A promotion candidate must prove enterprise judgement on day one — using nothing but the group’s financials, org chart and market position.

Dataset: A realistic multi-division enterprise dataset: financials, capital history, talent metrics and market share.

Your task: Build the enterprise diagnosis — value, capital, talent and risk — and present the first-90-days agenda a board would back.

An enterprise diagnosis and a board-ready 90-day agenda.

Data → Analysis → Decision, not Data → Code → Certificate

The Faculty Standard

Practitioners who have done the work

Every session is led by practitioner-faculty: PhDs, former central bankers, serving and former CFOs, and delivery leaders who have built and run the systems they teach. Cases are drawn from institutions they have advised, not textbook extracts. Faculty teach what they have decided with, under the same pressure you face.
